The monthly Juke Joint Youth Jam ("Kollektivet") was kicked off last week.
FOR THE YOUTH, AND BY THE YOUTH
The Juke Joint Studio in Notodden has long been used for recordings by artists from Norway and beyond – but now has opened its doors to a new initiative for youth. The monthly Juke Joint Youth Jam ("Kollektivet") was kicked off last week on April 11th to a full house of 40 young musicians.
Some were local residents, others from the local campus at the University of Southeast Norway – but all shared the same wish – to make music! Youth are in charge - "For the youth, and by the youth", where students and young locals unite in the spirit of playing/listening to music together.
Hosted by guitarist Jens Fjelle and vocalist Anne Lene Nordbø, previous participants at Little Steven's Blues School, it was a night full of music. During the course of the evening, four different bands played, followed by a jam session as the end of the evening.
The Juke Joint Studio is an original vintage analogue studio located at the Bok & Blueshuset by the Heddal Lake in Notodden with its roots in the famous Stax Studio in Memphis, the city that gave the world Rock & Roll, Blues and Soul music.
The link is the Juke Joint´s authentic Audiotronic 501 Soundboard, creating the same analogue magic that Stax recorded in the 60s and 70s with artists that included Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Wilson Pickett, Albert King, The Straple Singers and perhaps the most famous house band ever – Booker T and the MGs.
It is all part of the European Blues Center´s collaboration with the University of Southeast Norway and the new Blues Study Curriculum. The goal is to make certain that young students encounter a vivid music scene in Notodden, meeting people of their own age – and to create music mix open for all kinds of music.
Whether you are a young musician from near or far, you are welcome to join the monthly Juke Joint Youth Jam. Contact us for more information.
